The chain stitch is the basis of the single crochet, and I have made a special picture explanation for you as reference.

Turn your left palm toward you and hold the desired yarn in your right hand
Then place the tail of the yarn in front of your left palm’s pinky finger.

Wrap the tail of the yarn around your left pinky finger

Slide the tail of the yarn over the back of your left hand and place the yarn in front of your index finger.
Pinch the yarn tightly with your middle finger and thumb finger.

The hook presses the yarn from the back to the front.

Process of The hook presses the yarn from the back to the front.

Form a coil(loop)
Pinch the yarn tightly between the thumb and index finger of your left hand.

Use the counterclockwise winding method -(wrap the yarn over the hook).

Front picture explanation, two loops are formed on the crochet hook.

The hook is brought from the first loop to the second loop to form a V-shaped stitch.

Pull down with your left hand, tighten the loop, and tie a knot.

After yarn over, the hook is taken out from the first loop.

Yarn over (YO): Wrap the yarn over your hook from back to front.

After yarn over , the hook takes out these two loops to form a new loop.
Is single crochet a yarn eater?
Yes
📏 Comparison:
- To make a 10×10 cm square:
- SC = lots of tight stitches = more yarn
- DC = fewer, taller stitches = less yarn
We found that because the SC stitch uses small, tight stitches to create a dense, tight fabric, we needed more stitches to cover the same area compared to double crochet (DC).
If more stitches = we need more yarn!
What is single crochet good for?
All other stitches are based on the single crochet stitch, which is also the stitch used in most crochet dolls (amigurumi). So let’s lay the foundation first!
Do you need a turning chain for single crochet?
Yes
When you crochet single crochet rows , need 1 turning chain stitch
It helps bring your yarn up to the right height for the next row of stitches. please see picture as below

📝 Turning chains keep your rows even and neat.
Without a turning chain stitch, edges will pull tight and your crochet of project will start to slant or curl.
Does single crochet always curl?
🔄 Why sc might curl?
1.We found that if the stitches are pulled too tight, the fabric may curl, especially in the first few rows.
2.No 1 chain stitches or dropping stitches
- Forgetting to make chain stitches or accidentally dropping (wrong)stitches when changing rows can throw off the balance of the fabric.
✔️How to prevent curling?
- Relax your tension – Try to crochet with even, gentle pressure. Match the hook size to the yarn, and keep your hands relaxed.
- Don’t skip the turning chain – It helps maintain the proper height and shape of your rows.
- Count your stitches – Keeping your stitch count consistent across rows ensures the fabric stays flat and even. if your are beginner, use stitch maker for the first single crochet.
Why do my single crochets look weird?
- The most common reason for uneven crochet edges is accidentally adding or missing stitches within a row. You might not notice it at first, but as you continue, the mistake will become more noticeable and affect the shape of your project.( according to tutorial)
- Uneven tension is the main cause, where some stitches are too tight and others too loose.(more practice)
We think that your stitches will start to look neat, even, and just the way they should . Keep going—we’ve got perfect crochet.
How do you keep single crochet straight?
1.Make sure to make a chain of needles
We hook the first chain before each row, which helps keep the row high and prevents the edge from pulling or tilting. It is expected to form a V-shaped stitch, as shown in the picture.

2.Count the number of stitches
Mark the first and last stitches of each row with a stitch marker. make sure not to accidentally add or skip stitches. the number of stitches in each row is the same as the previous row.
3.Check the tension of your hands
If your hands are too tight or too loose, it will cause the edge to deform. keep consistent hand tension.
4.Practice makes perfect
The more we crochet, the more the refractive index can naturally form a stable ratio.
